Wall of One’s Own, video installation, 8 min loop + short films, 2003
In A Wall of One’s Ownthe process of me building a wall in the gallery space is filmed. The final video was cut down to 8 minutes and projected on the wall. Every time the video of the construction ends, a short film takes its place on the wall. The short films are my own observations of trivial and everyday phenomena seen at for instance Berlin ZOO or a hockey game. The short films transform the wall from a spatial object to a projection surface for art; in the shift there is a movement from the perception of being in a room to the distance and passivity of watching a film.
The title A Wall of One’s Own refers to Virginia Woolf's book A Room of One'sOwn. The book is based on a series of lectures where Woolf argues her hypothesis: The reason why there are so few great female writers is because women have not had access to rooms of their own, either physically or mentally.
